'La Bamba’ filmmaker to keynote Pima Summit

Ethnic, Gender & Transborder Studies Summit to be held April 26

Tucson, AZ – Noted Chicano filmmaker and playwright Luis Valdez, best known for his play “Zoot Suit” and film “La Bamba,” will be the featured speaker at an upcoming conference on ethnic studies at Pima Community College.

Sign up now for “The Maya-Maíz Roots of Raza Studies,” a collaborative conference between Pima, the University of Arizona and Arizona State University.

There will be panels, storytelling, performances, and art presenting diverse, indigenous perspectives from Mexico and the United States. Featured speakers include Maya educators from the Yucatán and others who will share their work and talk about our common strengths, connections and struggles across borders.

Keynote speaker Valdez is regarded as the father of Chicano theater. A pioneer in the Chicano movement and creator of El Teatro Campesino, he broadened the scope of theater and arts in the United States borrowing, in part, from Maya aesthetics.

The event sponsors are, at Pima, the Department of Ethnic, Gender & Transborder Studies/Sociology; Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; Office of International Education and Global Initiatives; Office of the Provost; Office of the Campus Presidents of Downtown and West Campuses; Division of Social Sciences; and Student Life. Outside sponsors include Arizona State University, the Department of Mexican American Studies at the University of Arizona and Mexican American Student Services at the Tucson Unified School District.
