PCC Joins 150+ Colleges & Universities Supporting DACA
Urges Supreme Court to Uphold DACA
October 7, 2019
Tucson, AZ -- Pima Community College has joined more than 150 colleges and universities urging the U.S. Supreme Court to continue the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) immigration program.
In a Special Meeting on Sept. 27, the Pima County Community College District Governing Board voted unanimously that the College join the Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration’s amicus curiae (Latin for “friend of the court”) brief regarding DACA. The brief urges the Supreme Court to affirm lower-court decision preventing the federal government from closing the program.
Created in 2012 by an Executive Order of President Obama, DACA allows certain individuals without lawful immigration status to request deferral from deportation and work authorization if they were brought into the U.S. as children and meet additional criteria, such as no criminal record and successful progress in education.
Arizona State University and the Maricopa County Community College District are among colleges and universities signing on to the brief.
The Supreme Court will hear arguments in the case on Nov. 12.
