First PCC-Santa Cruz County Nursing Assistant cohort honored
55 students honored, including 5 each from Nogales and Pascua Yaqui sites

Tucson, AZ – On Thursday, the first cohort from Pima Community College-Santa Cruz County in Nogales and the latest from the Pascua Yaqui Tribe’s Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA) site will be among 55 Pima Community College Center for Training and Development Nursing Assistant Program completers being honored.

Five students each completed their training at the PCC-Santa Cruz and Pascua Yaqui sites.
Lynda Gossett will be the student speaker. CTD Nursing Assistant Program Coordinator Carol Williams, F.N.P., M.S.N., B.S.N., R.N., will be the master of ceremony.
The students have completed 80 hours of classroom and skills laboratory instruction and 40 hours of clinical instruction at a long-term care facility. The Arizona State Board of Nursing sets the certification standards and approves the curriculum for this program. After completing the program, a student may apply to sit for a state certification exam to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA).
Nursing assistants help with basic care for hospital patients and long-term care facility residents. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual salary for CNAs in metro Tucson in May 2018 was $28,540. It forecasts metro Tucson job growth in the profession between 2016 and 2026 to be 11.9%, compared to 8% growth in that time for all occupations.
CTD offers certificate programs based on hours of successfully completed skills training rather than credits. It is based at Pima’s Desert Vista Campus, 5901 S. Calle Santa Cruz. Other CTD healthcare trainings are in Medical Office, Practical Nurse and Surgical Technologist.
