IBEST is a nationally recognized model blending basic skills instruction with career and technical course instruction. This allows a student who is not a high school graduate to simultaneously pursue their GED® and industry-recognized certificate.
In these cohorts, an Adult Basic Education instructor co-plans and co-teaches with an automated industrial technology instructor or logistics instructor, integrating basic skills with technical content to allow students to improve their skills and attain their goals more efficiently.
“I didn’t have anyone to mentor me through college,” said student Jason Tingelhoff, who completed the Automated Industry Technology IBEST certificate. “All of the extra academic and advising support the program offered really helped me be successful and realize my potential.”
Pima’s Automated Industry Technology and Logistics and Supply Chain Management IBEST programs give students the knowledge and experience they need to access opportunities in a variety of professional roles. In the Automated Industry Technology IBEST, students earn their Industrial Technology Level 1 Certificate and can seek an entry-level position or pursue career advancement in the advanced manufacturing sector, working as an automation engineering technician, electronics assembly technician or maintenance and instrumentation technician. In the Logistics and Supply Chain Management IBEST, students earn their Basic Logistics and Supply Chain Management Certificate and may seek entry-level and front-line supervisory positions in logistics, inventory control, purchasing, supervision, transportation and warehouse management.
For the past three semesters, both of these IBEST cohorts have moved through these programs, and now as they approach the end, the motivation continues, as many of the students are returning in January to continue their education toward an Associate’s degree.
Pima’s IBEST programs are a collaborative effort between its Adult Basic Education for College and Career, the College’s Career and Technical Education Division and Arizona@Work - Pima County One Stop.
