Pima’s 5th Annual Ethnic, Gender & Transborder Studies Summit Goes Virtual April 28
Tucson, AZ – In the spirit of “the show must go on,” Pima’s 5th Annual Ethnic, Gender & Transborder Studies Summit is going virtual this year.
“It's been very challenging to make a quick pivot from an in-person summit, as we had for the last four years, to a virtual platform. But the planning group decided that doing the summit virtually presented an exciting opportunity to create a new, public educational space that can incorporate new audiences while still catering to Pima students and employees and community members.." said Dr. Francisca James Hernández, head of Pima Community College EGTS/Sociology programs.

Sign up now for the summit, which will include keynote speaker Bamby Salcedo, transgender and migrant rights scholar and activist and president of TransLatin@ Coalition There also will be presentations, storytelling, art and a student scholarship contest about migrant and refugee experiences and the impact on local communities from multiracial-ethnic, gender, and sexuality perspectives. Featured speakers include local, national and international scholars, students, policy makers, and community activists. They will share their work and open conversations about our connections, shared struggles, and how to support each other to heal and build.
“The summit has always provided hope, good will, and common purpose while learning about and addressing critical social issues,” Hernández said. “We feel it vital to continue this tradition and contribute to some sense of normalcy and connection in the midst of so much change and isolation due to the pandemic. Hosting the event will be a test of our technical and organizational capacity, but we are encouraged by the dedication of our planning group to meet this challenge, and we look forward to making the 5th Annual EGTS Summit a success for our college and our community.”
