No property tax increase in proposed 2020-2021 College budget
Public Hearing and Special Meeting June 3
Tucson, AZ – The Pima County Community College District (PCCCD) has released its fiscal year 2021 proposed budget information. The proposed budget does not include an increase in property taxes.
The PCCCD Governing Board approved the proposed budget for publication at its Regular Meeting on May 13.
“Pima County residents are facing unprecedented financial pressure stemming from the COVID pandemic,” Chancellor Lee D. Lambert said. “Given the ongoing economic uncertainty, it’s the position of the Governing Board and the College that the College forgo the opportunity to raise its property tax levy on the taxpayers of our community.”
The College will generate approximately $2.0 million in additional revenue for fiscal year 2021 due to growth of existing property. A levy-neutral assessment will lower the primary tax rate from $1.3758 to $1.3373 per $100 of assessed valuation.
The College’s secondary tax rate is proposed to continue at zero as the College has no outstanding general obligation debt.
The release of budget information is in compliance with Arizona Revised Statute 15-1461.
The proposed budget was published in the Arizona Daily Star on May 18, and a second publication is planned for May 26, 2020. Video of the May 13, 2020 presentation to the PCC Governing Board regarding the proposed budget is also available.
Public Hearing, Special Meeting June 3
The Governing Board will hold a public hearing on the proposed budget, property tax rates, and levies on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. Following the guidance of public health officials, the College suspended face-to-face operation to the public and limited access to employees to promote social distancing and limit the spread of the coronavirus.
Accordingly, the Governing Board will conduct this meeting virtually. Members of the public are invited to view the live proceedings at PCCTV Youtube homepage. Members of the public are also invited to make comments and ask questions concerning the proposed budget and the District’s property tax levy either online by registering at https://www.pima.edu/about-pima/leadership-policies/governing-board/board-meetings/public-comment.html or in person at the District Office, 4905 E. Broadway Boulevard, in room C105.
A Special Meeting to vote on the fiscal year 2021 budget, property tax rates, and levies will follow the public hearing. During the Special Meeting, the Governing Board will consider a motion to not levy an increase to the primary property tax by a roll call vote. Any tax levy changes would take effect on July 1, 2020.
