Eight Unique Concerts Highlighting Pima Music Ensembles, Dec. 6 - 12
TUCSON, AZ - The Pima Community College Music Department presents eight concerts showcasing different ensembles and groups that Pima offers. Each ensemble performs a different repertoire that exhibits what the students have learned through the Fall semester.

Cost: $6/$5, the Percussion Ensemble and Musical Theatre Workshop are free. Tickets can be purchased at pima.edu/arts or at Pima Arts Events-Eventbrite.

Wed. Dec. 6, 7 p.m., Jazz Ensemble
This concert will feature the PCC Jazz Ensemble directed by Scott Black. The PCC ensemble will be performing music from the big bands led by Buddy Rich, Thad Jones, Woody Herman, and Count Basie. The band will even feature a TV theme song from the 1960s and will include solos that students have worked very hard on to meet the challenges of the music. Please come out and enjoy the band’s mission to promote the “Feeling of Jazz.” - Duke Ellington
Thur. Dec. 7, 7 p.m., Concert Band
The PCC Concert Band, under the direction of Victor Valenzuela, will present a diverse program encompassing various styles and genres. From a holiday medley to a contemporary band masterpiece, from music featured in the classic 'The Wizard of Oz' to compositions inspired by a Georgia O’Keeffe painting and, of course, a John Philip Sousa March. This concert is certain to be a delightful experience. Join us to support the Pima Band.
Fri. Dec. 8, 4:30 p.m., Percussion Ensemble
The PCC Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dr. Trevor Barroero present a free concert featuring an exciting and diverse array of traditional and contemporary percussion ensemble repertoire. The centerpiece of the concert includes Carlos Chávez’s monumental 1942 work for percussion sextet, “Toccata for Percussion Instruments.” The rest of the program will include other standard works by Steve Reich, Peter Garland, Richard Hochrainer, and more, with the entire concert utilizing more than two dozen different instruments, including marimbas, xylophones, vibraphones, snare drums, cymbals and traditional drums from around the world. This performance is certain to be exhilarating for audience members of all ages and backgrounds!
Fri. Dec. 8, 7 p.m., Mariachi Ensemble
Mariachi Azteca de Pima College, led by Don Fuentes, will perform Mariachi standards along with modern compositions, including Mexican variations and styles of the Son, Ranchera, Huasteca and Bolero.
Sat. Dec. 9, 3 p.m., Orchestra
PCC Orchestra, directed by Dr. Anne Grimes, presents an afternoon concert with music featuring an array of styles and genres. The performance will include Haydn Sinfonia (C Major), Bach “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” “Light Cavalry Overture,” “ Pines of Rome,” music from “Carmen,” and…..(drumroll please!)..... popular movie and video game themes including “Star Wars,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark, ”Merry Go Round of Life,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Mario Brothers” themes and more. Please come out and enjoy our semester’s work!
Sat. Dec. 9, 7 p.m., Guitar Ensemble
PCC Guitar Ensemble, directed by Michael Lich, will perform arrangements of songs from the United Kingdom as well as larger works by Olga Amelkina-Vera “Incantation and Rain”, Michael Lich’s “Animas,” and Joseph V. Williams II “Bears”. The concert will also feature appearances by the Angulo/Narcho Guitar Duo, the Bottorf/Iskandar Guitar and Violin Duo and a return performance by the MADA Guitar Quartet. Please join us for this riveting evening of guitar music!
Sun. Dec. 10, 3 p.m., Chorale & College Singers
PCC Chorale and College Singers, directed by Dr. Jonathan Ng, will showcase their musical talents in this performance. The PCC Chorale will enchant the audience with renditions of “O Danny Boy” (Chilcott) and “Laudate!” (Leavitt), accompanied by percussion and piano. The College Singers, a select mixed-voice a cappella choir, will present a diverse repertoire, including a 20th-century part-song, “The Rose” (Gjeilo), an American folk song, “Shenandoah” (Trotta), and two Chinese Folk Songs - “Mo Li Hua” (Lawson) & “Fengyang Song” (Yi), along with the uplifting British folk song “Sing a Song of Sixpence” (Rutter).
The final section of the concert will bring both the Chorale and the College Singers together. The SA chorus will perform “Ubi Caritas” (Lee) with flute. The mixed voice choir will perform “Red River Valley” (Williams), accompanied by violin, cello, and piano. The program will also include “Forever Music” with flute (Hayes), two holiday favorites - “The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy” for piano four-hand and percussion (Wilberg), and “I Wish You Christmas” (Rutter).
Tues. Dec. 12, 4 p.m., Musical Theatre Workshop
PCC Musical Theatre Workshop, directed by Dr. Anne Grimes, will perform several musical scenes from recent and classic musicals. Featuring student-selected and student-directed scenes and choreography. Performances include “One Day More” (Les Miserables), “Good Morning Baltimore” (Hairspray), “The Cat and the Moon” (Lord of the Rings), “He Lives in You” (Lion King), “Be Our Guest” (Beauty and the Beast), “Anyway the Wind Blows” (Hadestown), “I Know It’s Today” (Shrek), “Singin’ the Same Line” (In Pieces), and several other popular theatrical highlights.
