Eight Unique Concerts Highlighting Pima Music Ensembles, Dec 2-17

Tucson, Arizona - The Pima Community College Music Department presents eight concerts showcasing the different ensembles and groups that Pima offers. Each ensemble performs a different repertoire that exhibits what the students have learned through the spring semester.

  • Monday, December 9, 7 p.m. – Jazz Ensemble 
  • Tuesday, December 10, 7 p.m. – Concert Band 
  • Friday, December 13, 7 p.m. – Mariachi Ensemble 
  • Saturday, December 14, 3 p.m. – Orchestra 
  • Saturday, December 14, 7 p.m. – Guitar Ensemble 
  • Sunday, December 15, 3 p.m. – Chorale & College Singers 
  • Tuesday, December 17, 4 p.m. – Musical Theater Workshop 

December 2, 7 p.m., Percussion Ensemble 
Under the leadership of Dr. Trevor Barroero, this ensemble will explore traditional and unconventional percussion instruments, showcasing the group’s creativity and dynamic performance style. This semester’s program will focus on six diverse pieces showcasing the visual components of percussion, including the world premiere of Dr. Barroero’s new piece for 20 tambourines entitled “Jingle, Jangle, Tangle,” with all ten percussionists showing off a range of extended techniques and complex visual choreography. The program will also feature three brand new marimba trios by Josh Gottry inspired by Benjamin Moore’s paint colors, showcasing three percussionists on a single marimba. The program will conclude with Leroy Anderson’s hilarious concerto for typewriter and percussion ensemble. 

December 9, 7 p.m., Jazz Ensemble 
This concert will feature the PCC Jazz Ensemble, directed by Scott Black, who will also play bass. The ensemble will be performing music by Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Duke Ellington, Arte Shaw, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman. Pima lead trombone player Roger Wallace will be featured on “The Shadow of Your Smile,” and Billy Rubash will play Johnny Hodges’ solo role on Duke Ellington’s “Isfahan.” We will have two guests performing with the band: JJ Johnston on trombone (of course) and Oskar Anderson on trumpet. Performances feature solos that students have worked very hard on to meet the challenges of the music. Please come enjoy the band’s mission to promote the “Feeling of Jazz.” 

December 10, 7 p.m., Concert Band 
The PCC Concert Band, under the direction of Victor Valenzuela, will present a diverse program covering music from Bach to current composers. Your ear will be challenged and soothed while the Concert Band traverses many different styles and genres. We look forward to seeing you on this unique concert night. 

December 13, 7 p.m., Mariachi Ensemble - “Musica Y Cultura” 
Mariachi Azteca de Pima College, directed by Salvador Gallegos, will perform traditional and contemporary mariachi compositions representative of the folkloric Mexican music art form. 

December 14, 3 p.m., Orchestra 
Directed by Dr. Anne Grimes, the Pima Orchestra will perform a concert featuring an array of musical styles and eras. Pianist and Pima faculty member Dr. Alex Tentser will solo in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto #1, “I. Allegro con Brio.” The Orchestra will also perform another Beethoven’s favorite, “Shepherd’s Hymn,” from Pastoral Symphony #6. Other selections include Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (Mozart), “Valley of Poppies” (Charles Ancliffe), “L’Arlesienne Suite” (Bizet), Tchaikovsky’s (Meyer) “Romeo and Juliet Overture,” “The Lord of the Rings,” the modern “One Summer’s Day” (Hisaishi/Florens), and a holiday favorite, “Sleigh Ride.” (Anderson). 

December 14, 7 p.m., Guitar Ensemble 
PCC Guitar Ensemble, directed by Michael Lich, will perform duo, trio and orchestral works by guitarist composers from the Baroque to Contemporary eras. The performance will feature
“Suite Español” by Baroque guitarist Gaspar Sanz, as well as “Folds” by contemporary steel-string guitarist Ryan Ayers. The program will also include compositions by Ferdinando Carulli, Milan Tesar and Jürg Kindle. Please join us for this exciting blend of guitar orchestra music. 

December 15, 3 p.m., Chorale & College Singers 
PCC Chorale & College Singers, directed by Dr. Jonathan Ng, will showcase 20th-century choral music with haunting melodies and colorful harmonies. The chorale will open the concert with the world-known 20th-century choral motet “Locus Iste (This Place)” (Bruckner) and “Take These Wings” (Besig) written for flute and mixed chorus. The select mixed-voice a cappella College Singers will present a group of 20th-century part-songs: “Ubi Caritas“ (Gjeilo), “Flight Song” (Arnesen), “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair“ (Chilcott), “Peace Flows Into Me (Trotta), “The Turtle Dove” (Vaughan Williams), and the Christmas carol “Nova! Nova!” (Chilcott). The final section of the concert will bring together the Chorale & College Singers performing different types of choral music, vocal sextet, SSA chorus, spoken chorus, and mixed voice chorus with different instruments: vocal sextet, “Yarmouth fair” (Warlock); SSA chorus, “Loch Lomond” (Hildebrandt); mixed chorus, “Sanctus” from Requiem (Lukas); spoken chorus, “Geographical Fugue” (Toch), “Look At the World” (Rutter), “Paper Crane” (Norris); and end with Christmas all-time favorite “Jingle Bells” (Chilcott) which will bring you the best holiday spirit! 

December 17, 4 p.m., Musical Theatre Workshop 
PCC Musical Theater Workshop, directed by Kryste Andrews, will perform several musical scenes from recent and classic musicals, featuring student-selected and student-directed scenes and choreography. 
Pima’s music program provides education and training in both classical and popular music, with classes in theory, history, piano, guitar, studio instruction and sound production. Its musical ensembles are choir, band, Orchestra, jazz band, mariachi ensemble, guitar ensemble, and percussion ensemble. Course offerings are consistent with the first two years of a bachelor’s degree in music from Arizona’s state universities, and the program has a reputation for quality instruction and caring faculty.
