Experience the Pima Community College Fall Music Showcase, Oct. 19

Tucson, AZ - The Pima Community College Music Department proudly presents its Fall Music Showcase from 1-5 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 19. This free event invites audiences to enjoy an afternoon of diverse and captivating performances by Pima’s talented ensembles.

Experience everything from the rich harmonies of Chorale & College Singers to the dynamic rhythms of Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, String Ensemble, Mariachi Ensemble and Orchestra, in an afternoon you won’t want to miss.

Under the direction of Victor Valenzuela, the Pima Concert Band will present a short but diverse program. With a classic from the Wind Band Literature, two newer pieces for the band and a return to Broadway, this showcase performance is sure to entertain. 

Directed by Anne Grimes, D.M.A., Pima Orchestra will perform music of various genres including “Dreaming of Space” by Christopher Curtis, “Terra’s Theme,” arranged by Raedin Ralston, a Pima Orchestra horn player, and “Encanto.” 

Under the direction of Jonathan Ng, D.M.A., Pima Chorale & College Singers present a rich program of timeless folk songs, contemporary choral works and beloved classics. Highlights include Stuart Churchill’s “Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair,” Philip Stopford’s “Do Not Be Afraid,” Andrew Carter’s arrangement of “Autumn Leaves,” and David Moore’s rousing arrangement of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” Together, these works create a heartfelt celebration of love, resilience and the unifying power of song. 

Led by Michael Lich, Pima Guitar Ensemble will perform an eclectic mix of new compositions and arrangements for guitar orchestra as well as smaller ensembles. The program will feature colorful and exciting pieces by Luc Levesque, Francesco di Giandomenico, Lou Warde, and Enya. 

Pima combo Jazztechs, play jazz standards drawn from the Great American Songbook with an emphasis on horn interplay. The band consists of Billy Rubasch (saxophones), Ken Jones (trumpet), Scott Sherman (guitar), Howard Tuller (guitar), Michael Dwayne Jackson (vocals and piano), Eli Beren (bass and vocals), Andy Heck (drums), and occasional guest artists. Selections include “Doxy”by Sonny Rollins, “Whisper Not” by Benny Golson, “Recado Bossa” by Djalma Ferreira, “Reunion” by Benny Golson and “St. Thomas” by Sonny Rollins. 

Pima String Ensemble, under the direction of Fang Fang Li, highlights the expressive power of string music. Blending classical repertoire with contemporary selections, the ensemble delivers performances rich in harmony and artistry. 

Led by Salvador Gallegos, Pima Mariachi Ensemble, Mariachi Azteca de Pima College, will perform traditional and contemporary mariachi compositions representative of the folkloric Mexican music art form.
