PCC Fashionarte 2019 Sets Sights on Greater Success

Tucson, AZ – Pima’s Fashion Design and Clothing Department has expanded to two days in an effort to surpass last year’s milestone fashion show event that raised $5,000 for scholarships.

This year’s event is May 1 and 4, with various events at two venues. Pima is honoring Gadabout SalonSpas, which is marking 40 years in business. Gadabout also is providing all styling services for fashion show models. Fox Tucson Theatre again will host the fashion show and silent auction, May 4.The College also is collaborating with Tucson Museum of Art, celebrating its 95th anniversary. TMA will host a May 1 VIP reception, with special features, including a trunk show by Arizona designer Nicholas K.
Highlights include special presentations by fashion design company Nicholas K, founded by Arizona natives Nicholas and Christopher Kunz, and Gadabout, including “Four Decades of Fashion” in collaboration with Tucson’s Desert Vintage.
Pima offers a new Associate of Arts, Liberal Arts-Fashion Design concentration that transfers to the Bachelor of Arts Fashion degree atArizona State University Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. Pima also offers a Fashion Design Certificate. The night of the fashion show, a senior academic advisor will be on hand to give more information on the degrees and to answer questions about the Fashion Design program.
“Our department not only forms them as designers, but also gives them a wide vision of what the business of fashion is all about and the many paths they can take within the industry,” said Fashion Design Lead Faculty Nancy Spaulding, pointing out jobs as stylists, producers, forecasters, merchandisers and buyers.
Pima graduates who continue their education go on to some of the top design schools in the country, including Columbus (Ohio) College of Art and Design, Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (Los Angeles campus), and Fashion Institute of Technology – State University of New York.
The median wage for fashion designers in the U.S., was $67,420 in May 2017, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Employment of fashion designers in the retail trade industry is projected to increase 22 percent from 2016 to 2026.
This past year’s fashion show, which honored Etherton Gallery Founder Terry Etherton, sold out the historic 1,164-seat Fox, and included aVIP pre-show cocktail reception attended by approximately 250 guests, as well as a silent auction.
