Academic Standards

Throughout your college experience at Pima, you may hear the terms “academic standing,” “academic warning,” “probation,” or “restriction.” It’s important you know what these terms mean so you are able to graduate on time and without issue.

For questions on academic standards, please reach out to your academic advisor.

Good academic standing

Good academic standing at Pima means you have kept a 2.0 GPA and 67% completion rate for all your courses combined. To calculate your completion rate, divide the number of credits you have attempted against the number of credits you’ve actually completed. Include withdrawals and re-takes in your calculation.

Academic records are reviewed at the end of each semester. This evaluation determines your academic standing for the upcoming semester. If you have not maintained good academic standing, you will be notified by email.

Students must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress standards if they are receiving Federal Financial Aid and/or Veteran Education Benefits. Athletes and international students may also be held to higher or more restrictive standards.

Academic warning

If your GPA falls below 2.0 and your completion rate is less than 67%, you will receive an academic warning and a hold will be placed on your account.

To remove the hold on your student account:

  1. Create a Student Lingo Account.
  2. Choose one of the nine online modules on Student Lingo. Think of the skills you are interested in learning to help you achieve academic success. Select the one in which you’re most interested.
  3. Complete the whole module, including the end of module assessment and end of module evaluation.
  4. Print or take a screenshot of the certificate of completion.
  5. Submit the certificate of completion to virtualsupport@pima.edu or bring it to your nearest campus counseling department. Once you’ve submitted your certificate, it may take up to 24 hours to remove the hold.

For students who have an academic warning, we recommend speaking with an advisor or counselor.  They can help you create an individual plan for improving your standing.

Academic probation

Academic probation occurs when you have remained below a 2.0 GPA and 67% completion rate for a second semester following academic warning. If you receive academic probation, you are not on-track for graduation and will receive another hold on your account.

To remove this hold on your account, you need to meet with a counselor or advisor. They will walk through your goals and obstacles, review success strategies, and create a plan for helping you get back on-track. Please make an appointment with an advisor or counselor as soon as possible.

Academic restriction

Academic restriction happens when you have fallen below a 2.0 GPA for the most recently completed semester. Academic restriction applies only to students who have been on academic probation before.

To remove the hold on your account, you will need to make an appointment with the counselor or advisor you are working with now or who you have worked with in the past.
