Northwest Campus Upward Bound FAQs
What opportunities does Upward Bound (UB) offer?
Academic Year Saturday Enrichments
During the academic year, students attend Upward Bound sessions at Pima Community College Northwest Campus for support in core content area classes and standardized test prep. Transportation and food service are provided.
Summer Academy
During the summer, students participate in the six–week academy, which allows them to experience college on a smaller scale.

Tutoring, Test Preparation and Mentoring
Math, English and science tutoring services are available to all UB participants who have difficulty in a particular class or wish to remain ahead in their classes. We also provide SAT or ACT test preparation and college application, selection and financial aid services.
We offer academic mentoring with Marana High School guidance counselors and teachers to ensure you are obtaining and succeeding in courses necessary for college enrollment.
How much does Upward Bound cost?
Upward Bound is free to participants. All costs are paid for by the US Department of Education.
Who qualifies for Upward Bound?
Any student who meets the following criteria is eligible to participate in Upward Bound, provided there is space in the program:

What is my commitment to Upward Bound?
Students who are accepted into Upward Bound are accepted for the remainder of their high school careers provided they keep their grades up and continue to participate. We ask that students attend all Upward Bound sponsored events.
If I am accepted to Upward Bound, will I be allowed to participate in extra-curricular activities?
A: We encourage students to participate in extra-curricular activities in their high schools, such as sports, clubs, drama or band. Although we stress commitment to the UB program, we also realize that extracurriculars are valuable and we will work with you if you have matches, competitions, or performances scheduled at a time that conflict with a UB activity.
Can I work and participate in Upward Bound?
Yes, you can work, if it does not interfere excessively with Upward Bound required activities and attendance. You will have to advocate for yourself to request that you not be scheduled to work during an Upward Bound activity.
What are the services UB provides?
Group and one-on-one tutoring, instruction, counseling and academic advising, workshops on test-taking and career development, and study skills, information on scholarship and financial aid availability and assistance in getting applications for college and scholarships completed, educational and cultural activities, and career guidance.
Does UB provide transportation?
UB will provide bus or van transportation to events at Pima Northwest, field trips, and campus tours. Families may be required to drop off and pick up their students at Pima Northwest Campus for field trips and campus tours.
What does UB expect from me?

- Attend monthly Saturday Enrichments
- Participate in the summer program
- Attend group or individual advising meetings

If I enroll in the Pima Northwest Upward Bound Program, does this mean I have to attend Pima Community College once I graduate from high school?

Does Upward Bound pay for my college?
